A local guide for toddler-friendly adventures

If you’ve got little ones, you know: not all parks are created equal.

Some look great on paper… but don’t quite deliver when you’re chasing a toddler around. Others? Total magic.

Over the past few years, we’ve explored a lot of parks around Lexington—and these are the ones we keep coming back to. Whether you’re looking for a great playground, space to roam, or an easy nature walk, this list has you covered.

Save this for your next outing.

🌳 woodland park

Our forever favorite.

Woodland Park has that classic Lexington charm—massive old trees, a little bit of everything, and an energy that just feels alive. The playground is one of the best in the city for littles, and there’s plenty of space to explore beyond that. It’s the kind of park where you can stay way longer than you planned.

Why we love it:

  • Great playground for toddlers + bigger kids

  • Tons of shade

  • Central location (easy to pair with other plans)

🌿 gatton park

One of Lexington’s newest gems.

If you haven’t been yet, add this to your list. It’s newer, thoughtfully designed, and always seems to have something going on. The playground is fun and modern, and the whole space feels very walkable and open.

Why we love it:

  • Newer playground equipment

  • Frequent kid-friendly events

  • Beautiful setting along the water

🐢 mcconnell springs park

For slow, nature-filled days.

No playground here—but don’t skip it. This is one of our favorite spots for little nature walks. Think easy trails, lots to look at, and turtle spotting (which is always a win).

Why we love it:

  • Calm, low-key vibe

  • Great for exploring with littles

  • Feels like a hidden escape in the city

🌞 masterson station park

A little bit of everything.

Masterson is one of those parks where you can truly spend the whole day. Playground, walking trails, splash pad, dog park—it’s all here. Great option when you want variety or are meeting up with friends.

Why we love it:

  • Splash pad in warmer months

  • Lots of space to roam

  • Multiple activity options in one place

🚲 coolavin park

Underrated and always fun.

Coolavin is such a solid go-to. The playground is great, and there’s often something happening—bike polo, events, or just a good neighborhood energy.

Why we love it:

  • Reliable playground

  • Something new happening most visits

  • Located right by County Club & West Sixth

🎾 meadowthorpe park

Fresh, updated, and wide open.

This one has gotten a recent glow-up, and it shows.

The playground is newly renovated, and there’s tons of open space for running around—perfect for high-energy days.

Why we love it:

  • Updated playground

  • Open fields for play

  • Great for letting kids burn energy

🚣 jacobson park

An all-day kind of place.

If you want options, this is it. Playgrounds, splash pad, fishing, pedal boats—it’s easy to turn a quick stop into a full afternoon here.

Why we love it:

  • So many activities

  • Beautiful setting by the water

  • Great for longer outings

⚾ ecton park

A go-to for active kids.

Known for youth sports, but the playground is worth a visit too—especially the climbing wall, which is always a hit.

Why we love it:

  • Unique climbing features

  • Great for slightly older toddlers/kids

  • Lots of space to move

final thoughts

One of my favorite things about Lexington is how many great parks we have—each with its own vibe. Some days call for a big playground. Some days call for a quiet walk and spotting turtles. Either way, there’s a spot for it here.
